Job Description

The purpose of the consultancy is to enhance and foster relationships with prominent journalists and editors from both national and international media outlets based in Kenya. The primary aim is to secure coverage for UNICEF’s initiatives and children’s issues in Kenya linked to UNICEF’s key advocacy priorities. The consultancy also includes ensuring visibility for key donors, specific programmes, and campaigns, as well as advancing public advocacy on key advocacy priorities identified by UNICEF Kenya concerning children. Additionally, the consultancy will support media engagement related to the run-up to the national elections scheduled for 2027 and facilitate reporting on results achieved through the Country Programme during 2026 and 2027.

Minimum requirements

Education

  • A Master’s degree in journalism, Mass Media, Communications, Development Studies, or related fields required.

Work Experience

  • At least 8 years’ relevant professional work experience in communication, print, broadcast media, and online media, including experience covering children’s issues for a child rights organisation such as UNICEF.

Language Requirements

  • Mastery of English and Kiswahili are required, at the minimum, both oral and written.

Knowledge/Expertise/Skills

  • Proven experience in developing media communication strategies
  • Excellent writing skills especially in writing press releases and articles/stories for traditional and electronic media
  • Proven ability to research, analyse, evaluate and synthesize information
  • Solid and proven media contacts and the knowledge of current theories and practices in communication research, and the role of mass media
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team and have a strong understanding of UNICEF programmes
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural environment and establish harmonious and effective working relationships, both within and outside the organization
